5 World Cup Song Anthems You Need to Revisit

We have less than two weeks to the 2022 world cup and it’s time for a little nostalgia from the previous world cup tournaments. Over the years, we have had a ton of released world songs. However, there are those world cup song anthems you couldn’t just escape, songs that made an impact and are still iconic years later. Its time to take a look at some of the popular World Cup Song anthems.

1. Waka Waka by Shakira and Freshlyground- South Africa, 2010

Waka Waka is arguably one of the most popular songs, let alone a world cup anthem. Shakira made a huge impact with this song, which broke records and received great critical acclaim from critics as well as the general public. Almost a decade later, the song is still a vibe and is considered one of Shakira’s legacy songs.

2. La Copa De La Vida by Ricky Martin- France, 1998

This song not only propelled Ricky Martin’s career and album in 1999, it also became a fan favorite. To some people, it is considered the best world song to date although that is still debatable. He delivered high note powerful vocals with amazing lyrics which captivated the crowd and still bring the world cup spirit to date.

3. Wavin Flag by K’Naan- South Africa, 2010

2010 was a great year for music and especially the world cup. The chorus of Wavin Flag was and still is a favorite for so many people and was a close contender for the official world cup song in 2010. The delivered video also gave off a joyous mood, something that’s needed for the FIFA championships.

4.We Are One by JLo, Claudia Leitte and Pitbull-Brazil, 2014

JLo and Pitbull brought the world to a halt in 2014 and soon became a good jam for most listeners outside the football fandom. The Brazilian singer also brought a unique exciting sound to the song and it is a good song you should revisit once in a while.

5. To be Number One by Giorgio Moroder Project- Italy, 1990

With Italy hosting the World cup in 1990, Giorgio decided to do something different from his usual disco Italian genre. He went for a slower vibe with more instrumentals and great presentation of vocals. It’s not a joyous vibey song but its still a great world cup anthem.

Although some songs have been released for this year’s world cup consideration, the world cup song anthem has still not been chosen. Fans are looking forward to more releases with excitement about a rumored Nicki Minaj x Malum x Myriam which is set to release in less than 11 days. It’s been a while since the world had an extremely popular world cup song anthem and this year might just be the year we get it.
