Former Sports CS Hassan Wario Facing A Six Year Jail Sentence

Former Cabinet secretary Hassan Wario has received a six year prison sentence. He will face a minimum of six years if he fails to raise 3.6M misused at the 2016 Rio Olympic scandal.

Wario and National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) Stephen Soi, are facing corruption and abuse of office accusations. The two refused to comply with procedures relating to public funds. Former NOCK Chairman Stephen Soi, received a 105M fine with an option of 12 years in prison if he fails to raise the amount.

The court accused him of taking advantage of his office to allow three other names in the Kenyan travel list and paying allowances to the three illegal travelers.

“The additional names were added after they closed the accreditation. Clearly this was an indicator that the three were not part of the team Kenya,” said the court

“Some ministry officials misappropriated sh88,611,480 meant for air ticket. NOCK has misappropriated Nike contract funds and kits amounting to sh126million meant for athletes since 2013,” the report reads.

The court revealed that the ministry could not account for 54million. Magistrate Elizabeth Juma said that the former CS did not have the authority to allow the three to travel to Rio in Brazil. The three were Monica Sairo, Richard Abura and Edan Adow who all received allowance. The two are facing detainment at Gigiri police station awaiting their sentencing on Thursday.
