Since the wanga kingdom came to existence, there has been many leaders who have led the people. Below are some of the leaders up to the present leader.
Nabongo Wanga
He was the founder of the kingdom.Nabongo was a descendant of the rulers of the Buganda kingdom. He had three sons namely; Nabongo wabala, Nabongo murono and Nabongo musui. After his death there was a dispute between his sons over succession. Wabala, wanga’s appointed successor quarrelled with his elder brother murono over succession rights. Wabala was assassinated allegedly at murono’s instigation. Later on, murono became the leader before wabalas son defeated him in the battle. The son was musui and this made him to cross river nzoia and established a separate center.
Nabongo Netya
He reigned over the wanga kingdom from 1760 to 1787. There were any clans of the wanga that included muronos clan, abamuima’s clan at matungu and netyas clan that were brought together under netyas control with varying degrees of success. During his reign, there was land dispute that led to conflict among the wanga and their neighbours that were the teso, bukusu and joungenya. Nabongo netya is said to have struck an accord with the uasin gishu trading cattle and grazing land in exchange for maasai military assistants. During his death, the external conflicts of the maasai increased.
Nabongo Osundwa
He made peace with the maasai and consolidated power in mumias making it the administrative center of the wanga while matungu became the nabongo’s primary residence. Following his death a succession dispute arose between osundwa’s son kweyu and wamukoya that was in 1814.
Nabongo wamukoya
Osundwa’s choice of kweyu as his successor was actively contested by elders because the did not like. The elders then enthroned wamukoya in kweyus absence a decision which kweyu rejected and moved to eshimulu with his followers. He later established another center of his new wanga mukulu confederacy.
