Light At The End Of The Tunnel

The Street Lights

On September 11, 2021, a good Samaritan took photos of a young boy and shared them on his Facebook account. Emmanuel Mbaji Mruu, photographed Salim Khamisi in the streets of Shanzu, in Mombasa county. The grade 6 pupil was doing his homework using the street lights.

Lack Of Funds To Buy Tokens

Curious and concerned, Mbaji questioned him on why he was doing his assignment outside. Salim revealed that they do have power at home but his guardians had not paid for the tokens. This was a result of the financial status of the family.

According to Emmanuel who shared the photos, Salim studies at Jola Urabi Primary School. The shortage of Sh 135 is what compelled Salim to use the street lights to complete his homework. The family uses tokens worth Sh 135, daily.

“I Saw A Zeal”

From that act alone, one can tell how passionate and determined the grade 6 pupil is. This is what drove Emmanuel to publicize the story and ask for a hand in helping the family.

Electricity is taken for granted by many households who get to enjoy the luxury. However, for Salim, it is a thorn in the flesh because he has to find a way to study. Salim lives with his mother and his uncle. The two guardians both struggle to make ends meet. They cannot afford to buy tokens.

“I saw a zeal. I saw a great person in him. Can we help this brain?” wrote Emmanuel on his Facebook post.

Let There Be Light

Many Kenyans have come forward to aid the young boy’s case. Plans are underway to purchase a solar panel and a lamp for the family. This will come in handy for Salim. His hunger for education has convinced many that he is ready and willing to study. Where their is a will, there is a way.

Emmanuel and his team of well wishers will put a smile on Salim and his family.
