School Reopening Dates To Be Announced Soon

The Cabinet and national stakeholders’ committee will today meet to discuss and decide on the Kenyan schools reopening dates. The committee was formed to discuss proposals which were brought forward by the education task force and the council of governors.

The stakeholders meeting is going to be chaired by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and the CS for Health Mutahi Kagwe. President Uhuru Kenyatta is also expected to join the meeting ahead of his national address to the nation today.

The education stakeholders have proposed reopening of schools between 5th and 19th October. While the council of Governors suggested that Children in ECDEs should reopen in November. They also proposed that vocational centres be reopened at the same time, November.

Teachers, students and Kenyans at large are anxious to know the exact dates for reopening of schools in the country.

In today’a meeting, the team will also decide on whether to adapt a change in the school calendar. The parents and students will also know whether they are going to report in phases or all at once. Finally, there may be a glimmer of hope for Kenyan schools.

All this comes amid concerns of re-surging of Corona virus cases in the country. On Sunday, the country recorded over 200 corona virus cases.

UPDATE

President Uhuru Kenyatta will meet with the education cabinet secretary Magoha to discuss a formula on how the schools will reopen.

Doctor Magoha will lay out the new school calendar to the public after the meeting.
