Surgical Operating Robots During COVID19

The COVID-19 pandemic that began around October 2019 undoubtedly caused a lot of fear on the whole world. This was especially severe in medical community who had to deal with it first hand. Frontline workers who were to deal with the patient directly were practically scared of getting infected. Some of these workers are the doctors, clinical officers, nurses and community health officers. The fear was legitimate because the virus could be easily transmitted. For the specialists who were to perform surgeries were at a very high risk. Hence they were supposed to find a way to deal with the patients.

A “solution” for this is what led to the rise of robots which can perform surgeries. Surprisingly, these robots can perform it the same way the surgeons can. The robotic surgery involved performing surgery from a distance with the doctor, without any direct interaction. The robot that was first introduced was the Arthrobot. Arthrobot directed the just the patient to position himself or herself for the surgery. It was used for orthopaedic surgries where the patients could position themselves in a position for the surgery to take place. The robot has the ability to place the needle to a position where it is needed. Doctors on the other side direct the robot to operate the needle at the right place.

The robot has the ability to wear the gloves just like all the medical staff. This prevents the robot from contaminating the things used in the surgical process. For example if the surgery was supposed to be performed on the head, direction will be given on how to do it. After the patient has placed the head in a certain position, then the robot will take the syringe and inject the patient. The doctor will be doing a follow up of the process on the monitor. There are some cameras placed in the surgical room.

The robot will start the surgery by making an opening in the forehead to observe the internal organs. The doctor leaves the robot to do the opening while he or she watches from the screen. After the robot has done the opening then the doctor will have a look at the internal parts of the head and see if there is any problem. If there is any problem the doctor again directs the robot on what to do. This is to either remove a certain organ or object that could have stuck in the brain.

When the robot finishes the task of removing the object or organ, it steps to wait for the next instructions. If it is to return the head back to it’ s original position by closing the opening then the doctor will direct the robot to perform the task. After the robot finishes doing the task the doctor will direct the robot on the type of medicine to inject the patient. Later after the patient has woken up, the doctor will have prepared a report on what the robot should direct the patient to do. The patient will leave the room without directly meeting with the doctor.
