Lake Retba, popularly known as the pink Lake is located on the North of Cap Vert Peninsula of Senegal
What Makes Lake Retba Pink?
The pink water is caused by microalgae called Dunaliella Salina which is known for its high salt content, up to 40%. The algae produces a red pigment to assist in absorbing light which provides energy to create ATP.
The Pink Color
Lac Rose which means Pink Lake is what is used to describe Lake Retba. The water changes its color based on the weather and times of day. The pink color is more visible during the dry season.
Lake Retba Salt
Lake Retba forms mineral salt which accumulates on the floor of the lake. This attracts miners from countries across West Africa. The mesmerizing color also attracts visitors from all over the world who come to witness for themselves the wonders of planet earth. However, the conditions of the lake do not allow fish to live in the water.
This is a great place to stop by next time you visit West Africa.
