How Wedding Ceremony Is Conducted In The Tiriki Communmity

In the traditional communities, there are a lot of rites of passage majority of the people have to go through. These are considered essential parts of someone’s life that define your life. This is practiced in a lot of different communities in the world, especially African communities.

A wedding one of the rights of passage that one has to go through in the Tiriki community. It is among the many other rites like circumcision that every member of the community has to undertake. In the Tiriki community, men are allowed to marry any girl, but not from the same clan. Good research on the potential spouse is a requirement on the man’s side before their marriage.

The marriage proceeds once the dowry payment has been done. A marriage ceremony is usually prepared for long before the actual day. Both families prepare for the ceremony which is usually involves a lot of celebration and joy. Before the wedding day, the two families usually invite people to come and witness the ceremony. A day before the wedding, the bride usually sleeps in her home. In the morning, she is driven to the venue where the actual ceremony is scheduled. The bride and the bridegroom are usually driven to the venue early in the morning to for the performance of the right of passage.

Actual Wedding Ceremony

On the day of the wedding, the invited visitors usually avail themselves some minutes before the ceremony begins. Varieties of foods are prepared on the day and some the day before for a people’s feast. A traditional brew known as ” Busaa” is normally prepared for the old men to drink while they bless the newly weds. The couple is required swear in front of the elders and everybody that they have decided to get married. They also promise that they are going to be faithful.

Tiriki Community After Ceremony

At the end of the ceremony, the families introduce themselves to each other. Each head of the family introduces the entire family. This helps the two families to know each other well. There are some presents which are given and they perform some Tiriki dances while they beat the Isukuti and other drums. The two receive acceptance in the family and a certificate showing that they are married.
