Remember The JKUAT Student Who Tried to Kill Uhuru? This is What Happened to Him

The year 2019 was one full of drama and events, both good and bad. It was in the same year that a JKUAT Student surprised the public after he tried to break into State House armed with a knife. The man who was later identified as Brian Kibet Bera did that in June.

JKUAT Student

Brian was a Jomo Kenyatta University Student Mechanical Engineering Student in his 5th year. Confirming the incident to the public, Statehouse Spokesperson Kanze Dena revealed that Brian was shot and injured on the shoulder by security officers manning the gate after he drew a knife when he was challenged to stop.

In her statement, Kanze went on further to mention that Statehouse is a designated protected area and no one is allowed to get in without permission from relevant authorities.

After the incident, Kibet was booked at Kileleshwa Police Station. He was then taken to Kenyatta National Hospital to be treated for his gunshot wound. His Facebook posts revealed his home area, Mt. Elgon and the fact that he was fighting for what he termed as land injustice in the area.

Court

The JKUAT Student was later on arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts.  His father begged the State to let his son go claiming he was diagnosed with Psychotic disorder. This means he was not in the right state of mind at the time. He even went ahead to beg Uhuru Kenyatta and Kenyans to forgive him and his son for his behavior.

The Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi allowed for Kibet to be treated for his disorder after finding him unfit to take plea. He ordered that Kibet be remanded at Kilimani Police Station as his family made plans for treatment.

More than a month later, Kibet was brought back to court where he told the court that he wanted to save jobless youths in Kenya. He also insisted that he did not want to be taken to a mental facility. He cited reason that he did not want to brush shoulders with doctors and the police for fear that he will ‘kill them’. Kibet went on further to request the court to tell his father to leave him alone because he was an adult.

Mental Illness

The court ordered for Kibet to be taken back to the hospital because he was still unfit to take plea. “The accused still needs medical attention”, read part of the statement by justice Andayi. Kibet is still undergoing treatment at an undisclosed mental facility.
