School Heads Urged To Accept School Fees In-Kind To Curb Absenteeism In Schools

School heads are asked to work closely and accept school fees paid by parents in form of crops and animals that will enable students to stay in school for the better part of the term to curb rising absenteeism in schools.

Gem Yala based Nyamninia Secondary School, managed by  Principal  Ms. Judith Wambocho  said parents are problematic in getting their children in school and they formulated ways that have been adopted by parents and are paying fees in any form to keep the learners stay in class,

“Our parents are the problem in getting some cash even for the lunch program to enable their kids to be in school and this is how low Nyamninia has gone but we allow parents to pay fees in any form that will help the learners be in school, and that is the reason why we are fighting absenteeism because we ask the parents to bring even Kuku to school, there are parents that have brought Kuni because we allow them to bring Kuni in school and help them clear school fees,” Wamocho said.

This comes as Secondary Heads have been sending students home to fetch fees and that has derailed their academic performances since some stay at home when the parents run out of cash,Wamocho said Nyamninia currently allow parents to pay fees in any form that will be accepted and allow students to be in school,

“There are parents that have brought beans, maize, etc and this is what we allow, this is because we don’t want our learners to be out in the name that parents cannot bring cash, let it not just be cash, bring fees or lunch fee in any form, Nyamninia will accept and allow children to be in school” She added.

The principal appealed to her colleagues in other secondary institutions to refrain from sending students back to fetch fees and instead emulate Nyamninia Secondary since there is no need for students to stay at home,

“I want to appeal to my colleagues that there is no need for students to stay at home and yet they can bring these things in kind and you know these are the things we use in school. Instead of going to buy them why can’t we allow the parents to bring them, eventually will also help the learners to be in school” Judith Wamocho concluded.
