Kevin Otieno is a former student from Nairobi’s Light Academy. He is one of 833 students who garnered an ‘A’ plain of 81 points in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, 2020 exam. Otieno was invited to Egerton University main campus, to pursue a degree in Clinical Medicine. This was when (KUCCPS) announced the placement of students in the institutions of higher learning.
He is yet to report to the institution. It has been 11 days since the stated reporting date of September 6. The 17-year-old remains at his home because he cannot afford to pay his Ksh47,840 school tuition Benter Atieno, his mother, revealed that she is unable to raise the funds from her tailoring profession. Attempts to raise funding through other means, such as bursaries, have also bore no fruit. She claims that she has only been able to raise Ksh5,000. This was through church members. The single mother appealed to well-wishers to come to her son’s aid.
Previous Financial Difficulties
“I have attempted to raise the fee in every way possible, including family and friends, but no meaningful assistance has been received. I’ve only been able to raise Sh5,000 from church members,” Atieno explained.
Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time her son has missed school due to lack of funds. Kevin was forced to leave Lenana School in Nairobi in 2016 owing to a lack of school fees, despite acquiring 409 marks in his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam.
Atieno also sells githeri in Kisumu and she claims that a well-wisher intervened and helped him secure a chance at Nairobi’s Light Academy. Kevin received a full scholarship, allowing him to finish his studies. He joins the ranks of students who are unable to continue with their studies due to a lack of funds.
Financial Help
The family is now happy and seeing a future for their son. They have received a lot of help from well wishers and Kevin will now study his dream course free of charge
