Kenyan Celebrities That Have Come Out As Gay

Although the LGBTQ community has come to be accepted in the current world, its not the case in most of the African countries. There is still a resistance to gay people. In addition, the laws also prohibit this community in many ways. Despite all this, some Kenyan celebrities have come out as LGBTQ. Their coming out was or has been received in bad ways with many resolving to insults. Below are some of the Kenyan celebrities that have come out of the closet.

1.Willis Austin Chimano

The Sauti Sol band member had social media in a frenzy when he came out the closet. Although there was a rumor about his sexuality way before he came out, he received a lot of backlash from people. He posted a picture of him with his white hubby and is a proud gay man. Despite all the social media opinions, he has stood his ground and is openly gay.

2.Silas Miami

Silas is one of the most talented Kenyan filmmakers. Together with his male Caucasian lover, they posed on social media while he revealed how happy he was. He currently lives in South Africa where he continues to work in film.

3.Anita Nderu

The social media personality and sensation tweeted some controversial things and hinted her sexuality. Amidst referring to herself as an activist she tweeted “I hope my kids don’t pass through what I have for being lgbtq”. In addition, she caused a social media stir when she invited gay people to her cooking show. This landed her into a lot of trouble with social media “keyboard warriors”.

3.Binyavanga Wainaina

The award winning writer has also not been shy to come forward and reveal his support and involvement in the community. In 2014, he came forward to defend gay rights and activists where he received a lot of social media backlash. He revealed that he has been gay ever since he was five years old.

4.ED Wainaina

The digital artist tweeted “I’m bisexual, so now…will you accept me. My dp has the colors and just had to find the right time. Love y’all.” He got a lot of hate comments for it but also some supportive celebrities.

5.Noti Flow

She is definitely one of the most controversial artists in Kenya. Noti revealed that she into women and her involvement with them. Additionally, she also had a short term relationship with Vanessa Chettle. She has previously released videos in support of LGBTQ. Noti Flow has been open about her same sex relationships in the past and her views on them.

6.Audrey Mbugua

Previously known as Andrew Mbugua, she transitioned as a transgender early on when it was a really big deal amongst people. Many didn’t understand why she transitioned but she has always been advocating for the rights. She was awarded for her contribution to activism of the LGBTQ community. Audrey is now happily married.

7.Makena Njeri

Makena is a former Tahidi High Actress who is one of the popular lesbians in the country. Her reputation of being a cheater, however, has seen her face a lot of controversy. She was dating Michelle Ntalami but also cheated on her as her previous partners.
